Coast Guard rescues boater near Saugatuck, MI

CLEVELAND — A Coast Guard Air Facility Muskegon MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew hoisted a boater near Saugatuck, Michigan, Sunday.

Watchstanders from Sector Lake Michigan received a Mayday call over VHF-FM Channel-16 of a male voice asking if anyone can hear him. After conducting call-outs with negative results, Sector Lake Michigan received a notification from Coast Guard Station Grand Haven watchstanders relaying a report from a woman whose husband had not returned home from the night before.

Sector Lake Michigan watchstanders launched boatcrews from Station Holland and Station St. Joseph and requested a launch of a helicopter crew.

The crew searched the area after generating a position from a cell phone ping. Watchstanders from Sector Lake Michigan eventually made contact with the man via cell phone, and he confirmed that he was in distress.

Upon arriving on scene, the the helicopter crew hoisted the man and transported him to Muskegon where he was reported to be in good condition.

The Station St. Joseph 45-foot Response Boat-medium crew arrived on scene and towed the 21-foot vessel to South Haven, Michigan.
