Coast Guard, partner agencies respond to busy weekend in Long Island Sound

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After a busy weekend off of Long Island, the Coast Guard is reminding the boating public to be prepared and to practice safe boating during the active summer season.

In total, the Coast Guard and partner agencies responded to more than 20 cases of mariners in distress and 18 persons in the water wearing lifejackets after severe weather swept through western Connecticut and Long Island Sound.

In these cases, the Coast Guard rescued or assisted boaters across Long Island Sound ranging from taking on water, beset by weather, capsized, or disabled. In one case, a Coast Guard Station Eatons Neck boatcrew medically evacuated a female with an injured arm and safely transferred her to awaiting emergency medical services at Town Dock Pier in Huntington Bay.

The Coast Guard recommends boaters check the forecasted weather conditions prior to departing shore. In many cases, weather conditions can quickly deteriorate and catch boaters off guard and underprepared.

“The marine environment is complex and ever changing. That’s why prior to getting underway, always check the weather and ensure all required safety equipment is onboard,” said Cmdr. Valerie Boyd, search and rescue coordinator, Sector Long Island Sound. “Many of the individuals are alive today because they were wearing lifejackets.”

Coast Guard searching for missing vessel east of Port Canaveral

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Coast Guard is searching Sunday for a missing vessel east of Port Canaveral.​

Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville Command Center watchstanders received a distress call at 4 p.m. from a vessel stating they were caught in a storm and were in need of assistance.

Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater​ MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and a Station Port Canaveral 45-foot Response Boat-Medium commenced searching.

An Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft crew also launched to assist in the search.

El US Coast Guard rescata a dos personas de un barco con una fuerte vía de agua

NEW ORLEANS - Los Guardacostas rescataron a dos personas después de que su embarcación comenzara a hundirse a 40 millas náuticas al noreste de Venice (Louisiana) el pasado viernes.

Los vigilantes del Sector New Orleans recibieron el informe sobre la embarcación Miss Linda a las 16:53 horas, en el que se indicaba que ésta sufría una fuerte vía de agua con dos personas a bordo.

El USCG desvió un HC-144 Ocean Sentry del Aviation Training Center Mobile a las 17:32. La tripulación localizó al Miss Linda y lanzó dos balsas salvavidas con suministros de supervivencia.

La tripulación del Ocean Sentry permaneció en zona hasta la llegada del helicóptero, un MH-65 Dolphin de la Air Station New Orleans, que llegó a las 17:54 e inmediatamente izó a los dos supervivientes.

La tripulación del Dolphin los transfirió a Boothville (Louisiana), ninguno de los dos presentaban necesidad de atención médica.

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard rescued two people after their vessel began taking on water 40 nautical miles northeast of Venice, Louisiana, Friday.

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans watchstanders received a report at 4:53 p.m. of the vessel Miss Linda taking on water in Breton Sound, Louisiana, with two people aboard.

Watchstanders diverted a Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew at 5:32 p.m. The aircrew located the Miss Linda and dropped two rafts and supplies to the two individuals.

The Ocean Sentry aircrew remained on scene until a Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew arrived at 5:54 p.m. and hoisted the survivors.

The Dolphin aircrew transferred the survivors to Boothville, Louisiana, with no reported medical concerns.

MIAMI — The Coast Guard rescued 31 Haitians from the disabled pleasure craft, Summer Art, Sunday approximately 9 miles north of Bimini, Bahamas.

At approximately 5 a.m., Coast Guard 7th District watchstanders received a report of a disabled vessel with 31 people aboard approximately 9 miles north of Bimini. Watchstanders authorized the launch of a Coast Guard Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crew and diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Bernard C. Webber (WPC-1101) crew to the scene. The Bernard Webber crew safely embarked all 31 people and transferred them to Freeport, Bahamas.

“Due to an approaching cold front, high seas and wind made this rescue extremely challenging," said Cmdr. Jason Aleksak, chief of response at Coast Guard Sector Miami. "The responsiveness and professionalism of the crew of the Bernard C. Webber was remarkable and demonstrated our Coast Guard core value of devotion to duty.”

Coast Guard responding to vessel adrift in Gulf of Mexico

NEW ORLEANS -- The Coast Guard is responding to a vessel adrift in the Gulf of Mexico approximately 80 nautical miles south of Cape San Blas, Florida, Wednesday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a report at approximately 2 p.m. from crewmembers aboard a NOAA ship, the Gordon Gunter, that a 30-foot white sailboat named My Time appeared to be floating adrift.

Members aboard the Gordon Gunter reported that the My Time appeared to have electronics operating, sails stowed, and did not respond to radio calls or the ship’s horn. Due to the sea state the NOAA vessel was not able to deploy their small boat for further investigation.

Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater launched a Sikorsky HH-60 Jayhawk air crew to investigate, but due to deteriorating weather they returned to base. Coast Guard Cutter Marlin crewmembers and an Aviation Training Center Mobile HC-144 Ocean Sentry air crew have plans to launch to investigate as soon as weather permits.

Coast Guard searches for person in the water

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard is searching for a person in the water near Caillou Bay approximately 15 miles southwest of Cocodrie, Louisiana, Wednesday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report at 11:25 a.m. of a missing 60-year-old man who was last seen aboard the vessel Miss Trudy. There were two people aboard the vessel.

Sector watchstanders directed the launch of a Coast Guard boatcrew and two aircrews to search for the man.

Sector watchstanders later received a report at approximately 12:30 p.m. from Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office that the Miss Trudy sank and a Good Samaritan vessel recovered one of the people from the water.

Involved in the search are:

• An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans
• A 24-foot Shallow Water boat crew from Coast Guard Station Grand Isle

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — The Coast Guard and local agencies are searching for a person in the water Tuesday near Doyle Island, Maine.

A good Samaritan reported to watchstanders at Sector Northern New England that he saw a person falling into the water from a 20-foot commercial lobster boat operating in the vicinity of Doyle Island.

A 29-foot response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Jonesport is searching, along with a Coast Guard HC-144 Ocean Sentry and MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter air crews from Air Station Cape Cod.

A boat crew from Maine Marine Patrol and Maine State Police divers are assisting with the search.

Mariners are advised to exercise caution when operating in the area.

Coast Guard medevacs diver 115 miles offshore of Galveston, Texas

HOUSTON —The Coast Guard medevaced a 54-year-old diver from a charter vessel approximately 115 miles offshore of Galveston, Texas, Saturday night.

Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders received a report from a representative of the vessel Fling of a female passenger who reportedly began exhibiting symptoms of a heart attack. Watchstanders notified the duty flight surgeon who recommended the medevac.

An Air Station Houston MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew and a Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crew were launched.

Once on scene, a rescue swimmer was deployed to check on the condition of the passenger while the MH-65 refueled due to the distance offshore.

The woman was then hoisted and transported to awaiting emergency medical services personnel at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

"Through excellent coordination between multiple Coast Guard air assets, our command center and the crew of the Fling, all teams involved were able to work seamlessly to get the diver the medical assistance she needed from an area offshore where hoists are not routinely conducted," said Ensign Terrell Sisk, command duty officer at Sector Houston-Galveston.

The woman was reported to be in stable condition.

Coast Guard searching for overdue boaters near Pensacola

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard is searching for three overdue boaters near Pensacola, Florida, Thursday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a report that a man and his two sons had not returned by the anticipated time. They launched from Navy Point Boat Launch in Bayou Grande.

Missing are:

• David Washington, 80 years old, hometown unknown
• David Washington Jr., age and hometown unknown
• Darryl Washington, age and hometown unknown

While conducting a search pattern, a Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile HC-144 Ocean Sentry fixed-wing aircrew located a capsized vessel matching the description of the boat the overdue mariners were on.

Involved in the search are:

Coast Guard medevacs injured cruise ship passenger 70 miles southeast of Nantucket

BOSTON— A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod aircrew medevaced an 84-year-old woman Monday after she fell and sustained a fractured ankle and a head injury while on the cruise ship Queen Mary 2 about 70 miles southeast of Nantucket.

Queen Mary 2’s crew notified Coast Guard watchstanders at around 9 a.m. of the circumstances and requested a medevac for the patient.

An Air Station Cape Cod MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew arrived on scene at around 11:45 a.m. and hoisted the patient along with her son and a registered nurse from the ship.

A Coast Guard HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft also responded and provided communication support.

The helicopter crew transported the patient and passengers to Massachusetts General Hospital.

The patient was reported to be in stable condition at the time of the transfer.

Coast Guard searches for 50-year-old man missing from cruise ship 85 miles west of Fort Myers, Fla.

 MIAMI - The Coast Guard is searching for a 50-year-old male reported missing from a cruise ship Tuesday approximately 85 miles west of Fort Myers, Fla.

Missing is Brian Lamonds, 50, Greensboro, North Carolina.

Coast Guard Key West watchstanders received a call at approximately 10 a.m., from the cruise ship stating the man was missing and reportedly went overboard from the Carnival Paradise.

A Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew, an Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft crew and the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Isaac Mayo, homeported in Key West, are aiding in the search.
