BOSTON​ — The crew of Air Station Cape Cod held a 40th anniversary memorial​ service Wednesday for the crew of Aircraft 1432 who gave the ultimate sacrifice on Feb. 18, 1979.

Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Jim Stiles, Royal Canadian Air Force Captain George Burge, Petty Officer 2nd Class John Tait, Petty Officer 2nd Class Bruce Kaehler and Petty Officer 2nd Class Mark Torr launched 40 years ago to rescue a fisherman from the Japanese fishing boatKaisei Maru. The weather was severe: winds in excess of 30 knots, seas over 20 ft., and reduced visibility from snow. This was the third attempt to​ medevac the crew member, the other​ attempts proving unsuccessful due to weather conditions and not knowing the exact position of the fishing boat. At 5 a.m., the boat was located and the rescue basket lowered. During the rescue, the HH-3F Pelican experienced a sudden loss of power and fell into the turbulent seas, claiming four out of the five lives. Torr was the sole survivor.​

The crew of Air Station Cape Cod, family, friends, and past shipmates gathered to honor the memory of this​ fatal accident, where four crew members gave their lives.

Coast Guard searching for man missing in Hudson River near Poughkeepsie

NEW YORK — Coast Guard crews are searching for a person in the Hudson River near downtown Poughkeepsie, New York, Tuesday afternoon.

Missing is Paul Machettia, a 48-year-old man.

Watchstanders at Sector New York command center received a call from the City of Poughkeepsie of a person in the water in the vicinity of Waryas Park, at approximately 12:30 p.m., Tuesday.

It was reported that five people entered the Hudson River and one of them began to struggle to stay afloat. The missing person then entered the water to help, but he failed to resurface.

Coast Guard medevacs sick fisherman 6 miles off Nantucket

BOSTON — A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod aircrew medevaced a 40-year-old man experiencing abdominal pain Tuesday six miles southwest of Nantucket.

The captain of the fishing vessel Provider notified Coast Guard watchstanders shortly after 2 p.m. of the sick crew member.

An Air Station Cape Cod MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew was conducting prescheduled training in the area at the time and diverted to assist.

The aircrew hoisted the fisherman to the helicopter and flew him back to Air Station Cape Cod where he was transferred to awaiting emergency medical services personnel.

Coast Guard medevacs injured cruise ship passenger 70 miles southeast of Nantucket

BOSTON— A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod aircrew medevaced an 84-year-old woman Monday after she fell and sustained a fractured ankle and a head injury while on the cruise ship Queen Mary 2 about 70 miles southeast of Nantucket.

Queen Mary 2’s crew notified Coast Guard watchstanders at around 9 a.m. of the circumstances and requested a medevac for the patient.

An Air Station Cape Cod MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew arrived on scene at around 11:45 a.m. and hoisted the patient along with her son and a registered nurse from the ship.

A Coast Guard HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft also responded and provided communication support.

The helicopter crew transported the patient and passengers to Massachusetts General Hospital.

The patient was reported to be in stable condition at the time of the transfer.

Coast Guard medevacs man from cruise ship 80 miles south of Nantucket

BOSTON — The Coast Guard medevaced a 76-year-old man from the cruise ship Silver Muse Thursday approximately 80 miles south of Nantucket.

A crewmember aboard the cruise ship contacted Coast Guard watchstanders via satellite phone at about 9:30 a.m. reporting one of their passengers was experiencing symptoms of paralysis and needed further medical treatment. 

A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod helicopter crew deployed to assist, arrived on scene at approximately 11:45 a.m. and hoisted the man.

The aircrew then transported the man to Cape Cod Hospital where his care was transferred to awaiting medical personnel.
