Sector San Francisco launched a Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and a Coast Guard Station Vallejo 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew to the scene to assist the kite surfer.

There were no injuries reported.

“Any time you’re heading out on the water, whether you’re kite surfing, kayaking, or boating, we strongly urge you to have a marine VHF radio on you at all times,” said Cmdr. The boaters could not refloat their vessel when high tide returned Wednesday morning.

The aircrew hoisted the men aboard the helicopter and brought them to the Millville Airport in Millville, New Jersey, where they were met by the local fire department.

“It’s important for boaters to be familiar with the tides and currents in the area they're boating,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Steve Setnicky, a watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay. “When waters recede, boaters can find themselves in trouble, so it’s important they have operational communication devices, the right gear for the weather and they file a float plan with a friend or loved one in the event they don’t come back when planned.”

Video by Petty Officer 2nd Class Cory Mendenhall

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, UNITED STATES

A Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco helicopter crew rescues two stranded boaters in San Pablo Bay, Aug. 1, 2018, after their 30-foot sailing vessel ran aground west of Mare Island. The boaters were transiting the bay when their engine became disabled, causing them to drift into shallow waters.

SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard rescued two boaters near Mare Island in San Pablo Bay, Wednesday, after their 30-foot sailboat ran aground.

The boaters contacted Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders around 4:30 p.m., reporting that their boat was disabled and they had run aground west of Mare Island.

A Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco helicopter crew diverted to the scene. The shallow depth of the water hindered a rescue by boat.

Once on scene, the helicopter crew assessed deteriorating weather conditions and made the decision to lower the rescue swimmer to the stranded boaters. The helicopter crew hoisted the boaters into the helicopter and transported them to Napa County Airport.

The helicopter crew consisted of Lt. Adam Frye, pilot; Lt. Anders Manley, co-pilot; Petty Officer 2nd Class Joshua Piasecki, rescue swimmer; and Petty Officer 3rd Class Nicole Fontes, flight mechanic.

“The boaters opted to call the Coast Guard early instead of potentially allowing the situation to worsen overnight,” said Frye. “This allowed us to execute the rescue during daytime under favorable conditions and get everyone home safely.”

The sailboat is anchored where it ran aground as the owner makes plans for salvage.

SEATTLE — A Coast Guard aircrew hoisted an hiker after she suffered head and back injuries from a fall off a cliff on Obstruction Island, Wednesday.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station/Sector Field Office Port Angeles transferred the hiker at Bellingham International Airport to emergency medical service personnel, who took her to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center for further care.

Around 10:30 p.m. watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound received the hoist request from members of the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.

“Paramedics on the scene had administered CPR for approximately 20 minutes before gaining the slightest pulse,” said Lt. Jacob Marks, one of the two helicopter pilots involved in the response. “The helicopter arrived on scene and assessed the challenges of the confined cove, surrounded by 50 to 100 foot-tall trees and a steep sloping terrain.”

Marks and the other pilot relied on night vision goggles to maintain a separation between the helicopter and the terrain. The rescue swimmer was lowered and traversed the cliffs to meet the ground party who were helping the patient breathe using a bag-valve mask.

In order to maintain her breathing, the hiker and rescue swimmer were hoisted simultaneously.

“Remarkably the crew was able to execute this hoist in extremely challenging conditions while maintaining critical life support to the survivor,” said Marks.

A paramedic was also hoisted, so that they could continue to provide care from aboard the helicopter, and was transferred along with the hiker at the airport.

The hiker's residence and condition after transfer unknown.
