Coast Guard rescues man 800 feet down Crater Lake caldera

The man who was rescued reportedly fell approximately 800 feet into the caldera of Crater Lake near Rim Village.

NORTH BEND, Ore. — The Coast Guard rescued a man who fell into the Crater Lake caldera, Monday afternoon, assisting the National Park Service and a District 3 Technical Rope Rescue Team.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew from Sector North Bend hoisted the man out of the caldera and transferred him to an AirLink Critical Care Transport team who flew the injured man to Bend for care and treatment.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Bend received a call​ at​ 3:47 p.m., from the Crater Lake National Park Service rangers requesting helicopter support for an injured man who fell into Crater Lake’s caldera near Rims Village.

The Coast Guard aircrew arrived on scene at 4:28 p.m. with the District 3 rope team already 600 feet down into the caldera. The District 3 team reported they could hear a man yelling from further down into the caldera.

The aircrew was hovering above the injured man within 15 minutes of arriving on scene and conducted the hoist before landing in a nearby parking lot and transferring the injured man to the AirLink helicopter crew. The aircrew departed Crater Lake at 5:27 p.m., stopped in Roseburg to refuel and returned to North Bend.

The condition of the injured man is unknown at this time.

Coast Guard searching for person in the water

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard is searching for a person in the Mississippi River in St. James Parish, Louisiana, Wednesday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report at 8:22 p.m. of a missing man from the towing vessel St. Genevieve who was last seen on the vessel between mile marker 161 and 162 on the Mississippi River.

The missing man was last seen wearing a blue shirt and blue jeans.

Sector watchstanders directed the launch of an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans and a response boat crew from Coast Guard Station New Orleans to search for the man.

Coast Guard rescues 2 men, 3dogs near Poplarville, Mississippi

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard rescued two men and three dogs near Poplarville, Mississippi, Sunday.

Watchstanders at the Eighth Coast Guard District in New Orleans received a report from Pearl River County Sheriff’s Office at approximately 2:10 a.m. of two men and three dogs stranded in a vehicle on the McNeill McHenry Ville Highway overpass near Poplarville​ due to rapidly rising river flooding.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans directed the launch of an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans to assist the people and the dogs.

The helicopter launch was delayed until 3:46 a.m. due to weather conditions.
The aircrew arrived on scene at 4:30 a.m., hoisted the two men and the dogs and transported them to awaiting emergency medical services at a nearby field in stable condition.

“We faced torrential rain, lightning and low visibility but, thanks to our training, we were able to safely transport the two men and the dogs to safety,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Johannel Mejia, an aviation maintenance technician at Air Station New Orleans. “It’s times like this, when we’re able to make an impact on someone’s life, that makes this job so fulfilling.”

Coast Guard medevacs man near LA coast

SAN PEDRO, Calif. — The Coast Guard medevaced an 83-year-old man from a fishing vessel 70 nautical miles off the coast of Los Angeles Saturday. 

At approximately 9:00 a.m., the captain of a chartered fishing vessel requested assistance from the Coast Guard for an 83-year-old man aboard the vessel who was unresponsive with an irregular pulse.

After consulting with the flight surgeon, Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach command center watchstanders dispatched a Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco Forward Operating Base Point Mugu MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to assist.

After arriving on scene, the helicopter crew lowered a rescue swimmer, hoisted the man into the helicopter and transported him to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance.

Coast Guard medevacs cruise ship crewmember 45 miles south of Marathon

MIAMI—The Coast Guard medevaced a 41-year-old man from the cruise ship, Norwegian Getaway, Monday approximately 45 miles south of Marathon.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Key West received a call from the cruise ship at midnight stating a crewmember was suffering from internal issues and needed a medevac.

Coast Guard Air Station Miami MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew arrived on scene at 5:40 a.m., hoisted the patient and transferred him to the air station where awaiting emergency medical services transported him to Jackson Memorial Hospital for further medical care.
