Coast Guard, partner agency rescue 6 people after boat capsizes near Davenport

ALAMEDA, Calif. — The Coast Guard and Santa Cruz Harbor Master rescued six people from the water Sunday after their boat capsized near Davenport.

At 11:13 a.m., Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders received multiple 9-1-1 relay calls about a 21-foot recreational boat taking on water with six people aboard near Davenport. None of the individuals were reported wearing a life jacket.

Watchstanders directed the launch of a Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and a Coast Guard Station Santa Cruz 29-foot Response Boat-Small crew at 11:17 a.m.

The boat capsized and all six people entered the water at 11:41 a.m.

The Station Santa Cruz boatcrew and Santa Cruz Harbor Master arrived on scene at 11:58 a.m. and retrieved all six individuals, taking three survivors each.

“We encourage all mariners to have life jackets, as situations can change quickly on the water and wearing a flotation device can be a life-saving decision," said Capt. Howard Wright, the Sector San Francisco deputy commander. "Thankfully, the quick response and excellent coordination of Station Santa Cruz, the Santa Cruz Harbor Master, the Sector San Francisco Command Center and Air Station San Francisco saved six lives and was a great success."

Coast Guard medevacs man near LA coast

SAN PEDRO, Calif. — The Coast Guard medevaced an 83-year-old man from a fishing vessel 70 nautical miles off the coast of Los Angeles Saturday. 

At approximately 9:00 a.m., the captain of a chartered fishing vessel requested assistance from the Coast Guard for an 83-year-old man aboard the vessel who was unresponsive with an irregular pulse.

After consulting with the flight surgeon, Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach command center watchstanders dispatched a Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco Forward Operating Base Point Mugu MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to assist.

After arriving on scene, the helicopter crew lowered a rescue swimmer, hoisted the man into the helicopter and transported him to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance.

Coast Guard rescues four boaters near Suisun Slough

SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard rescued four boaters after their 17-foot fishing vessel ran aground near Suisun Slough, Saturday morning.

The stranded boaters contacted Coast Guard Station Vallejo watchstanders via cell phone at approximately 4 a.m., reporting they had run aground with one passenger who was reportedly diabetic. 

A Station Vallejo boat crew arrived on scene and determined a tow could not be completed because the vessel was hard aground. A Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew was launched to the scene to complete the rescue.

At approximately 7 a.m., the Dolphin helicopter crew arrived on scene and hoisted two of the boaters, including the diabetic boater, and took them to Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa. The helicopter then returned to the aground vessel, hoisted the two remaining boaters and took them to Napa County Airport. 

The owner plans to refloat the vessel at high tide. There were no reported injuries.

"Never underestimate the hazards of operating a boat in the delta," said Lt. Cmdr. Joshua Murphy, the Air Station San Francisco aircraft commander for this case. "These individuals were lucky they had cell phone coverage in such a remote location. We're all very grateful that we could help."

The Coast Guard urges boaters to always have a marine VHF radio aboard to communicate with responders in an emergency. Boaters can use VHF channel 16 to reach Coast Guard watchstanders in the event of a distress situation.

Coast Guard searches for missing 48-year-old man near Newport Beach

SAN PEDRO, Calif. — The Coast Guard and local first responders are searching for a missing man in the water near Newport Beach Sunday night.

The missing person is described as a 48-year old man, approximately 6 feet, 220 lbs., with brown eyes, brown hair, and was reportedly wearing a dark t-shirt and grey shorts. His 17-foot Boston Whaler was found washed ashore near Newport Beach at approximately 6:00 p.m.

At approximately 6:00 p.m., Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach watchstanders received initial notification of a possible missing person in the water near Newport Beach.

Watchstanders dispatched crews aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco's Forward Operating Base Point Mugu and the Coast Guard Cutter Narwhal to begin searching for the missing person.

Orange County Sheriff Department's Harbor Patrol, Newport Beach Police Department, Newport Beach Lifeguards and Huntington Beach Police Department personnel are also involved in the search.
