Coast Guard cutter assists disabled boat

NEW ORLEANS— Coast Guard Cutter Decisive assisted a disabled vessel offshore Mobile, Alabama, Saturday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a report at 7:23 a.m. Friday that the 52-foot vessel, Sava, was disabled and adrift with four people aboard approximately 82 nautical miles south of Cape San Blas, Panama City, Florida.

Sector watchstanders directed the launch of an HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crew from Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile and diverted Coast Guard Cutter Decisive to assist the vessel.

The aircrew arrived on scene at 9:57 a.m., located the vessel and established communications.

The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Decisive arrived on scene at 7:27 p.m. Friday, launched a rescue and assistance team and were able to repair the vessel’s engine.

Coast Guard Cutter Decisive escorted the vessel to shore.

The vessel safely anchored near St. Andrews Marina in Panama City, Florida, at 8:15 p.m. Saturday.

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard rescued five people who went into the water after their vessel capsized in Mississippi Sound, Saturday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Mobile, Alabama, received a report at 2:55 p.m. Saturday that an unknown number of people went into the water after a vessel capsized approximately 2 miles south of Gulfport Harbor.

Sector watchstanders directed the launch of a 45-Foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Gulfport to rescue the people.

A good Samaritan aboard a personal watercraft rescued six of the 11 people.

The Coast Guard boatcrew arrived on scene at 3:36 p.m., rescued the remaining five people and transported them to Station Gulfport in stable condition.

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard medevaced a man from a fishing vessel approximately 46 miles south of Mobile Bay, Alabama, Saturday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a report at 7:44 p.m. Friday of a man aboard a fishing vessel going in and out of consciousness.

Sector watchstanders diverted an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile to medevac the man.

The aircrew arrived on scene at 8:34 p.m. and transported the man to Providence Hospital in Mobile, Alabama, in stable condition.

NEW ORLEANS -- The Coast Guard responded to a vessel that caught fire approximately 4 nautical miles south of Perdido Pass, Alabama, Saturday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a report at approximately 2 p.m. that the charter vessel Hoss Fly III was on fire off the coast of Perdido Pass.

All eight passengers aboard were transferred to a good Samaritan vessel. There were no injuries reported.

Sector watchstanders directed the launch of a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Pensacola to assist Orange Beach Fire Department in the response.

The crew arrived on scene at 2:30 p.m., and the fire was declared extinguished at 2:49 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard rescued two people from a vessel that ran aground near Cat Island, Mississippi, Wednesday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Mobile, Alabama, received a report at 5:40 p.m. of a grounded vessel with two men aboard without food or water near Cat Island.

Watchstanders directed the launch of an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans to assist the people.

The aircrew arrived on scene at 8:30 p.m., recovered the two men and transported them Air Station New Orleans in stable condition.

Coast Guard adjusts port conditions in Gulf Coast region

NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard is adjusting port conditions and pre-staging response assets in the Gulf Coast region due to a forecast tropical depression expected to form by Thursday.

Port conditions change based on weather forecasts, and current port conditions can be viewed on the following Coast Guard homeport webpages:

The Coast Guard is warning the public of these important safety messages:

• Stay off the water.​ Hurricanes and tropical storms can be deadly and our ability to conduct rescues can be diminished or non-existent at the height of a storm. Be prepared, stay informed and heed storm warnings.
• Be prepared. Owners of large boats are urged to move their vessels to inland marinas where they will be less vulnerable to breaking free of their moorings or to sustaining damage. Mooring lines should be doubled in case of high winds. Boats that can be trailered should be pulled from the water and stored in a place that is not prone to flooding. Those who are leaving their boats in the water are reminded to remove EPIRBs and to secure life rings, life jackets, and small boats. These items, if not properly secured, can break free and require valuable search and rescue resources to be diverted to ensure people are not in distress.
• Stay informed. The public should monitor the progress and strength of the storm through local television, radio, and the Internet. Boaters can monitor its progress on VHF radio channel 16. Information can also be obtained on small craft advisories and warnings on VHF radio channel 16.

Coast Guard searches for person in water near West Ship Island, Mississippi

NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard is searching for a person who jumped off a boat near West Ship Island, Mississippi, Saturday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Mobile, Alabama, received a report at 1:23 p.m. of a missing 17-year-old male who jumped off the yacht Lady Monroe approximately 0.25 nautical miles north of West Ship Island.

Involved in the search are:

• An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans
• A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Gulfport
• The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Manowar
• Mississippi Department of Marine Resources

Coast Guard, local partners searching for 2 people in Mobile Bay, Alabama

NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard is searching for two people who reportedly fell off their boat in Mobile Bay, Alabama, Wednesday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a report at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday of three people falling off their boat without lifejackets into Mobile Bay.

One person was safely recovered on Gaillard Island.

Involved in the search are:

• A 45-Foot Response Boat-Medium boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Dauphin Island
• An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans
• The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Manowar
• Local partners from Daphne Search and Rescue, Alabama Marine Resources, Mobile Police Department, Bon Secour Fire Department, and Alabama State Troopers
