Coast Guard rescues 3 from damaged fishing vessel near Sabine Pass, Texas

HOUSTON - The Coast Guard rescued three fishermen after they abandoned ship from a shrimp boat approximately 20 miles offshore from Sabine Pass, Texas, Wednesday evening.

Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders received a report from the owner of a 74-foot commercial shrimping vessel that three fishermen were in need of assistance after their vessel was struck by a possible tornado. The fishermen activated their emergency position indicating radio beacon and abandoned ship to a liferaft.

An Air Station Houston MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew was launched to assist. Once on scene, the aircrew hoisted the three fishermen from the liferaft and transported them to the air station at Ellington Field in Houston.

The vessel was last reported afloat with no signs of pollution. All three fishermen were reported in good condition.

Weather on scene was 10 to 15-foot seas with 46 mph winds.

Coast Guard rescues four teenagers from the water near Cameron, Louisiana

HOUSTON​ — The Coast Guard rescued four teenagers adrift on a surfboard near Cameron, Louisiana, Thursday.

Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders received a report from the Cameron Parish Sheriff's Office of four teenagers on a surfboard who were being swept out to sea approximately 500-yards from shore.​ A good Samaritan attempted to help but was unable to reach them.​ Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast.

Two Coast Guard Station Sabine boat crews and an Air Station Houston MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew were launched.​ ​ An Air Station Corpus Christi C-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew was diverted and spotted the adrift teenagers once on scene.

The Station Sabine Response boat crews recovered all four teenagers and transferred them to Station Sabine where they were met by family members.
Weather conditions were reported as 15 mph winds with 1-foot seas.

Coast Guard hoists 2 men after sailing vessel runs aground near Matagorda Island, Texas

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Coast Guard hoisted two men from Matagorda Island, Thursday morning, after their sailing vessel ran aground due to the loss of its mast.

Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders received a report that two men participating in a regatta from Houston to Port Aransas aboard the 37-foot sailing vessel Tradewinds were unreachable by cell phone after a storm impacted the area Wednesday evening.

Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi watchstanders received a call from the owner of the sailing ship Tradewinds, who reported that he and a crewmember were stranded on Matagorda Island after his vessel had lost its mast and ran aground due to stormy weather. The owner of the vessel also reported concerns of possible hypothermia.

A Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi MH-65 Dolphin aircrew was launched and hoisted the two men to emergency medical services personnel at Port Lavaca Airport. Both men are reported to be in stable condition.

Coast Guard rescues 5 from capsized vessel near Crystal Beach, Texas

HOUSTON — The Coast Guard rescued three adults and two teenagers from the water approximately 2 miles offshore of Crystal Beach, Texas, Saturday.

Galveston County Sheriff's Office contacted Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders to report a capsized vessel with five people clinging to the hull.

Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders diverted an Air Station Houston MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew and the Coast Guard Cutter Sea Horse and launched a Station Galveston 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boat crew.

“Thanks to prompt notification and coordination from Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, we were able to rapidly divert the Coast Guard Cutter Sea Horse and our Air Station Houston helicopter, while simultaneously launching a response boat from Station Galveston to ensure rescue assets were on scene within minutes of the vessel capsizing,” said Lt. Cmdr. Jarod Toczko, search and rescue mission coordinator at Sector Houston-Galveston.

Once on scene, the crew of the MH-65 deployed a rescue swimmer to check on the condition of the survivors. The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Sea Horse then arrived on scene and recovered all five individuals from the water.

The survivors were transferred to Station Galveston's RB-M where they were transported to Station Galveston. No medical assistance was requested.
“I am extremely proud of our crew for their quick action and excellent coordination with both air and boat station assets to safely rescue all five people from the water,” said Lt. j.g. Weston Fortna, commanding officer of Coast Guard Cutter Sea Horse.
The owner will coordinate salvage of the vessel.
