Pratt & Whitney GTF™ Engine Fuel Savings Exceed $270M

PARIS, June 19, 2019 – Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), estimates that its Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engine customers collectively have saved more than 150 million gallons of fuel valued at $270 million USD, while avoiding 1.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions since the engine entered service in 2016. The GTF engine program continues to attract new orders and is ramping up production deliveries, all while supporting a growing in-service fleet.    
"The GTF engine is providing incredible value to our customers, enabling them to reduce operating costs while opening new markets," said Tom Pelland, senior vice president, Commercial Engine Programs at Pratt & Whitney. "The geared architecture is delivering fuel savings and environmental benefits that are unmatched in the industry today."
Over the past year, the company welcomed 14 new airlines to the in-service GTF family, and more than doubled the fleet. There are now over 470 GTF-powered aircraft in operation with 36 airlines around the world. Total engine flight hours are over 2.7 million for the combined GTF powered fleet of A320neo family, A220 and E190-E2 aircraft.
Pratt & Whitney production rates are at historic highs as the company continues to ramp up production and remains on track to meet GTF engine delivery commitments for the year. GTF engine shipments in the first quarter of 2019, including those in the spare engine pool, more than doubled those from the first quarter of 2018. Pratt & Whitney developed the world’s first horizontal jet engine assembly lines which provide up to 50% more productivity compared to the traditional assembly process.
Pratt & Whitney is investing more than $2.5 billion in 21st century manufacturing and aftermarket technology to transform its global footprint to support the ramp up of the GTF and other engine programs.
Since entering into service in early 2016, the GTF engine family has delivered on its promised ability to reduce fuel burn by 16 to 20 percent, and to dramatically reduce regulated emissions and noise footprint.

SMBC Aviation Capital Selects Pratt & Whitney GTF™ Engines to Power 20 Additional Airbus A320neo Family Aircraft

Paris, June 17, 2019 – SMBC Aviation Capital has selected Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engines to power an additional 20 A320neo family aircraft with options, bringing the leasing company's total to 50 firm GTF-powered A320neo family aircraft. Pratt & Whitney is a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

Air Macau Takes Delivery of First Airbus A320neo Aircraft Powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF™ Engines

MACAU, April 30, 2019 – Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) and Air Macau celebrated delivery of the airline’s first Airbus A320neo aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engines. The delivery was celebrated during a ceremony in Macau hosted by Air Macau and attended by representatives from Airbus and Pratt & Whitney.

Wizz Air Receives First Airbus A321neo Aircraft Powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF™ Engines

HAMBURG, GERMANY, MARCH 7, 2019  Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), and Wizz Air Hungary Ltd. (Wizz Air) celebrated delivery of the airline’s first Airbus A321neo aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines. This delivery marks the first in Wizz Air’s total firm order of 110 GTF-powered A321neo aircraft with purchase rights for up to 90 more. Pratt & Whitney will also provide Wizz Air with engine maintenance through a long-term EngineWise™ Comprehensive service agreement.

Eagle Services Asia Inducts First Pratt & Whitney GTF™ Engine

SINGAPOREJan. 8, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Pratt & Whitney's Singapore engine center, Eagle Services Asia (ESA), a member in the global network of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities that service Pratt & Whitney's GTF engines, has inducted its first PW1100G-JM engine for overhaul. Eagle Services Asia is a joint venture between SIA Engineering Company and Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).  


PW1100G-JM geared turbofan engine. ESA has invested nearly US$85 million to upgrade and modernize the facility to perform GTF MRO, which includes training employees and acquiring new tooling, advanced capabilities and machinery," said Brendon McWilliam, senior director, Aftermarket Operations – Asia-Pacific, Pratt & Whitney. "ESA's new GTF and GP7200 engine capabilities join its established support of the existing PW4000 engine fleet. Modifications to the facility will improve productivity, reduce set up time and boost efficiency across operations. Current PW4000 engine customers will also benefit from these efficiencies."
The facility is uniquely modernized and re-purposed to handle multiple, simultaneous engine overhaul lines for Pratt & Whitney and Engine Alliance engine models – the PW4000 family, PW1100G-JM, and GP7200 engines, respectively.  ESA also re-configured its engine test capability to accommodate the new GTF engine model. Engine Alliance LLC is a joint venture of Pratt & Whitney and General Electric.
In 2019, ESA will gradually introduce a new ground-based flow system, which will enable visual line of sight on the GTF engine overhaul line. In the new system, engine modules will move from one station to another, improving the visibility of operations through the line from disassembly to assembly and test, in contrast to the old engine repair work bay. Already proven in the automotive industry, the system improves productivity while maximizing the use of existing space. At full capacity, the flow lines can accommodate up to six GTF engines at a time.

Pratt & Whitney’s GTF™ Engines Shine on Display at 2018 Airshow China

AIRSHOW CHINA, ZHUHAI, November 5, 2018 – Pratt & Whitney’s GTF™ engines are on display at the 2018 Airshow China in Zhuhai as the impressive Embraer E190-E2 “Shark” aircraft makes its debut China demonstration tour.  The engines will also be highlighted on airBaltic’s A220-300 static display, set to begin its demonstration tour after displaying at the show. The GTF currently powers more than 50 aircraft in China, across 8 operators with over 175,000 engine flight hours. Pratt & Whitney is a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
Pratt & Whitney announced at this year’s Farnborough Airshow that in the past 12 months it has received more than 2,000 new GTF engine orders and commitments, including options and spares. Now, there are more than 280 GTF-powered aircraft delivered to 30 operators around the world.  Total engine revenue hours are over 1.3 million for the combined GTF powered fleet of A320neo family, A220 and E190-E2 aircraft.  Total fuel savings is estimated at 65 million gallons.

Qingdao Airlines Takes Delivery of First A320neo Aircraft Powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF™ Engines

HAMBURG, Germany, Oct. 25, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) and Qingdao Airlines celebrated delivery of the airline's first A320neo aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engines.  Pratt & Whitney will also provide Qingdao Airlines with engine maintenance through a long-term EngineWise® Comprehensive service agreement. Qingdao Airlines is the eighth GTF engine operator in China.

Aegean Airlines Selects Pratt & Whitney GTF™ Engines to Power up to 62 Airbus A320neo Family Aircraft

HARTFORD, Conn.Oct. 22, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), today announced that Aegean Airlines has selected the Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engine to power up to 62 Airbus A320neo family aircraft: 30 firm, 12 option, and up to 20 leased aircraft. Pratt & Whitney will also provide the airline with engine maintenance through a long-term EngineWise® Comprehensive service agreement.

How Much Data Does a GTF Jet Engine Generate?

When Pratt & Whitney debuted its seminal R-1340 Wasp engine in 1925, there was plenty to be anxious about. The engine marked the fledgling company’s first foray into the aviation industry. It featured a radical but unproven new crankshaft and master rod design aimed at generating greater thrust while keeping weight to a comparably low 650 pounds. But with all this, there was one thing that probably didn’t weigh too heavily on anyone’s mind: What to do with the tremendous volume of data generated by the Wasp, or more accurately, the lack thereof. 
While telemetry has always played a pivotal role in aviation, the volume of data it used to collect was relatively small. The original Wasp had gauges for things like horsepower and fuel level, but not a whole lot more. Fast forward 75 years to the PW6000 and the beginnings of a more data-driven future start to take form, with a little fewer than 100 sensors deployed on each engine. Go just a little further to the Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engine and it becomes clear that a paradigm shift is underway.
The GTF engine incorporates 40 percent more sensors than the V2500® engine, and can generate approximately 4 million data points per engine per flight, enabling significant improvements in addressing unplanned maintenance.
That amount of telemetry would have overwhelmed the engineers and operators of the original Wasp, but today, a host of powerful analytics solutions enable stakeholders to effectively manage and leverage data  to optimize operations and drive smarter decision making.
Pratt & Whitney introduced their EngineWise™ services brand in 2017. Pratt & Whitney's Geared Turbofan Engine for Airbus A220 Achieves FAA ETOPS Certification

FARNBOROUGH, EnglandJuly 16, 2018/PRNewswire/ -- Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), today announced its PW1500G engine has been granted 180 minute Extended Range Operations (ETOPS) certification by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). ETOPS certification sets the maximum allowed amount of single-engine flying time that an aircraft can be from the nearest suitable airport. Pratt & Whitney's PW1500G engine exclusively powers the Airbus A220-100 and A220-300 aircraft fleet.

(NYSE: UTX), estimates that its customers have saved more than 40 million gallons of fuel worth more than $75 million USD, while reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions since the Geared Turbofan (GTF) engine entered service in early 2016.  
The GTF engine powers a current fleet of 165 aircraft across three aircraft platforms and 23 airline operators around the world. Total flight hours are more than 830,000 for the combined GTF-powered fleet of A320neo, C Series and E190-E2 aircraft.
