Coast Guard medevacs man from cargo ship 35 miles west of Tampa Bay

TAMPA, Fla. — The Coast Guard medevaced a 22-year-old man from a cargo ship 35 miles west of Tampa Bay, Tuesday.

Medevaced was Shuklendra Singh, 22, from India.

At 4:52 a.m. Sector St. Petersburg watchstanders received a distress call via VHF-FM marine band radio channel 16 from a crew member aboard a 614-foot cargo ship, the Bahama Spirit, from Vanuatu. The crew member reported Singh suffered from a seizure and needed emergency assistance.

A flight surgeon from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater recommended Singh be medevaced.

An Air Station Clearwater MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew was launched, and medevaced Singh to Tampa General Hospital.

Coast Guard medevacs 89-year-old man from cruise ship 120 miles west of Great Inagua, Bahamas

An Air Station Clearwater MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew medevacs a 89-year-old man from a cruise ship 120 miles west Great Inagua, Bahamas, Monday, July 9, 2018. The man was transported to Cheshire Hall Medical Centre accompanied with a nurse after suffering from symptoms of a stroke.

MIAMI — The Coast Guard medevaced a man Monday from a cruise ship 138 miles west of Great Inagua, Bahamas.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., a crewmember aboard the Carnival Vista contacted Coast Guard 7th District watchstanders stating a man was suffering from chest pains and was in need of emergency care. 

Watchstanders launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater. The aircrew arrived at approximately 6:46 p.m., hoisted the patient and transferred him to local emergency medical services who transported him to Cheshire Hall Medical Center for further care.

Coast Guard Medevacs Man 275 Miles West of San Diego

A Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Sector San Diego medevacs a crew member from the 595-foot freighter ship Anna M approximately 275 miles west of San Diego July 7, 2017. The man was suffering from symptoms of stroke. 

SAN DIEGO — The Coast Guard medevaced a 58-year-old man from a freight ship approximately 275 miles west of San Diego, Saturday.

The crew of the 595-foot freight vessel, Anna M, contacted Coast Guard Sector San Diego's Joint Harbor Operations Center watchstanders at approximately 5:45 a.m. Saturday, requesting assistance for a crew member experiencing symptoms of a stroke. 

At the time of the report, the vessel was approximately 380 miles west of San Diego. The vessel adjusted course toward San Diego to facilitate a medevac.

A Coast Guard Sector San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew launched at approximately 3:15 p.m. to assist. Due to the distance from shore, a Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento C-27 Spartan aircraft also launched to provide radio coverage.

At approximately 7 p.m., the Jayhawk crew arrived on scene and hoisted the man into the helicopter. At approximately 9:30 p.m., the crew arrived at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla and transferred the patient to the hospital's care.

Coast Guard medevacs diver near Cape Lookout, NC

A Coast Guard aircrew aboard a MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter medevacs a diver suffering from possible decompression sickness near Cape Lookout, North Carolina, June 17, 2018. The diver was safely hoisted up and transported to Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. 

WILMINGTON — The Coast Guard medevaced a man who was showing signs of decompression sickness approximately 10 miles east of Cape Lookout, North Carolina, Sunday.

A crewmember aboard a 52-foot diving vessel contacted the Sector North Carolina command center via VHF-FM radio channel 16 at 10 a.m. and notified them the diver may have surfaced too quickly and was experiencing shortness of breath.

Sector North Carolina diverted a MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter aircrew from Air Station Elizabeth City that was conducting training nearby.

Once on scene, the aircrew was able to safely hoist the man up and transport him to Norfolk Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia.

“Divers experiencing decompression sickness need to receive medical attention as soon as possible,” said Lt. Tiffany Zehnle, command duty officer. “Today, the crew contacted us immediately after they noticed the symptoms, like shortness of breath after the diver surfaced, which really made this a successful case. Some other symptoms to be on the lookout for are numbness, dizziness and pain in joints after surfacing from a dive.”
