Coast Guard hoists 2 men after sailing vessel runs aground near Matagorda Island, Texas

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Coast Guard hoisted two men from Matagorda Island, Thursday morning, after their sailing vessel ran aground due to the loss of its mast.

Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders received a report that two men participating in a regatta from Houston to Port Aransas aboard the 37-foot sailing vessel Tradewinds were unreachable by cell phone after a storm impacted the area Wednesday evening.

Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi watchstanders received a call from the owner of the sailing ship Tradewinds, who reported that he and a crewmember were stranded on Matagorda Island after his vessel had lost its mast and ran aground due to stormy weather. The owner of the vessel also reported concerns of possible hypothermia.

A Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi MH-65 Dolphin aircrew was launched and hoisted the two men to emergency medical services personnel at Port Lavaca Airport. Both men are reported to be in stable condition.
