Coast Guard rescues 3 boaters after vessel capsizes near St. Catherines Island

A Coast Guard Air Station Savannah MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew rescues three boaters after their vessel capsized Tuesday, June 19, 2018, near St. Catherines Island, Georgia. The boaters were transported to Hunter Air Force Base where EMS was waiting. 


CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Coast Guard rescued three boaters Tuesday after their vessel capsized near St. Catherines Island, Georgia.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Charleston received a call from a good Samaritan at 12:45 p.m. stating while flying his plane he saw a capsized vessel with possible people in the water.

An Air Station Savannah MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew in the area diverted to assist at approximately 12:57 p.m.

At 1:05 p.m., the Dolphin crew located three people waving their arms on the beach and landed to assess their condition. After confirming all boaters were accounted for, the Dolphin crew embarked two boaters while a Dolphin crewmember stayed on the beach with the remaining boater.

The Dolphin crew transported the two boaters to Hunter Army Airfield where EMS was waiting. The Dolphin crew returned to the beach, embarked the remaining boater and Dolphin crewmember, and returned to Hunter Army Airfield.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the vessel capsizing is under investigation.
